Chapter 9

A disturbance startled Cassandra awake. For a moment, disorientation claimed her, then, remembering the events of last night, she threw her arm across the empty space where Kamal should have been sleeping. Apprehension arched her body into a sitting position as her gaze searched the room. Where was he?

Was it possible she dreamt the entire incident?

Spying the bloody gauze on the nightstand confirmed her grim suspicions. The daunting question remained. Where was Kamal? Did something happen to him during the night and she slept through the incident?

In the distance, the murmur of voices captured her attention. She smiled and let out the breath she’d been holding since she woke up and discovered him missing. She’d recognize that voice anywhere.

Kamal.

Her forehead creased as his voice boomed with anger. What the hell was going on? He was furious with one of his men. She threw her legs over the side of the bed and tiptoed to the door, leaning forward to eavesdrop on his conversation.

From what she could make out though the garbled voices, his guards were divulging information on who attempted to assassinate him. Murder him! She strained to hear the conversation but at times the voices dropped into a muted octave to quiet for her to hear.

Then, a door opened off the terrace and Kamal’s voice rang precise and clear. “If he thinks he can get away with this, he’s mistaken.”

“My sheik, you can’t meet with him in the desert? You’d be a sitting duck, and in your weakened condition? You need to rest, regroup, then take him on.”

Nodding, she silently agreed.

Listen to him, she silently begged.

But Kamal didn’t seem to absorb the rationale the man expounded. “I’ll be ready to depart in two hours.”

What? Why was he so hellbent on attending this stupid meeting? It might end up costing him his life. Less than twelve hours ago he nearly died. Why couldn’t he postpone the meeting?

“But, my sheik?”

Thank goodness someone was the voice of reason. There was no way he could drive across the vast desert. The extreme heat and dehydration would set his recovery back weeks if not kill him. She remembered the way the SUV jostled her when she came to the palace. In his condition he wouldn’t withstand that type of physical punishment.

In a bitter voice, Kamal asked, “Have you heard from Asad?” She could tell by his cadence he was pacing the floor.

“Not a word,” the man, Seti, supplied.

Kamal stopped. “Something’s wrong. He’s never gone this long without contacting me.”

Cassandra leaned forward, not wanting to miss a word.

“Have you pinged his phone?”

“Several times, my sheik.”

“After the events of last night, I’m concerned he may be in danger. I need you to personally take control of the situation, finding him your top priority.” The hard edge in his voice produced a burst of fear down her spine. Her hand covered the gasp escaping her. Where Mattie and Asad in danger? Had something happened to them and that’s why they weren’t contacting her or coming to Bajhi? The man’s next words snapped her out of her pondering.
